Addressing Poverty in the UK - Clothing Collective Stories

General Poverty Stats from Joseph Rowntree Foundation report that a staggering 13.4 million people in the UK were living in poverty in 2021/2 that's around one in five of our population living in poverty. Of these:

  • 7.9 million were working-age adults

  • 3.9 million were children

  • 1.7 million were pensioners.

Our partners at Wandsworth Foodbank provide emergency food, support and advice to people and families across Wandsworth who are experiencing severe hardship. As well as providing emergency food and household essentials, trained volunteers help people find further support to try to resolve the financial hardship they’re experiencing. We are proud that our clothing vouchers can be offered to food bank guests who are in need of warm clothing.

They support people like Amira and her children have lived in one room in a hotel for more than six months, placed there by social services after fleeing domestic violence.

And people like Matthew who was referred to Wandsworth Foodbank by a job centre adviser after a life-threatening illness and emergency surgery meant he was unable to work.

“Until it happens to you, you don’t realise how bad life can be. I had to stop work. It was devastating, because the funds I’d put to one side, they were soon gone. I even sold my tools just to make ends meet. I was being threatened that I was going to lose my place. My world was just coming round my ears.”

Everyone needs comfortable warm clothing - support us today and together we can provide this basic necessity to even more people facing hardship.
