More than 14.2 million people in the UK (21%) were in poverty in 2023/24. This included:

7.9 million (around 1 in 10) working-age adults

4.5 million (around 1 in 3) children

1.9 million (around 1 in 7) pensioners
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s ‘Destitution in the UK 2023’ report found that around 3.8 million people in the UK (including over one million children) experienced destitution in 2022. This meant they could not afford to meet their most basic physical needs to stay warm, dry, clean and fed.
These figures have more than doubled since 2017, and there is further evidence of deepening poverty in the increasing numbers of people using food banks and the emergency parcels being delivered by the Trussell Trust network.
