Ambassador profile: Penny Salman (@threadsforapenny)

Our third thrifter ambassador to announce is Penny Salman, who is known as @threadsforapenny on Instagram.

What got you interested in pre-loved/secondhand clothes?

I have always loved the unique pieces you can find secondhand, but I really fell in love with it, and committed to shopping pretty much exclusively secondhand, when I started upcycling clothes and learning about the negative impacts of fast fashion..

What do you love about charity shops?

So much!! I love the range of styles, the unique pieces, the fact that you’re donating to charity, and the community feel!

Favourite charity shop?

The Hangar, Kent

What do you typically shop for in charity shops?

I usually look for things on my wish list, but I love a good rummage, so I often shop for things that catch my eye then!

Any purchase that stand-out as being particularly special or memorable?

I have a fur collared, maxi puffer jacket that I found in my local charity shop and it is my favourite find of all time!!

Do you get preloved items from anywhere else?

Vinted, eBay and Depop.

What advice would you have for people who are interested in switching out their shopping habits to buy more secondhand clothing?

Unsubscribe from those fast fashion emails, unfollow fast fashion influencers and if you see clothes you like from a fast fashion brand, wait 2 weeks and you’ll find it on Vinted for a fraction of the price!

Why did you decide to become an ambassador for Clothing Collective?

I love Clothing Collective’s mission and I think it’s super important that they provide agency to people in need of clothes because, although it may seem trivial, clothes are actually a huge part of our identity.

What are you hoping you will be able to do as an ambassador for us?
